Koochiching County board approves routine claims, payroll, hires and a transportation lead separation

Koochiching County commissioners took a series of routine actions and personnel steps during their annual meeting in Little Fork.
The board approved the January summarized payment list totaling $3,990,237.99 and January payroll/ACH totals of $1,578,689.82. Commissioners also approved courthouse and highway claims (combined items) and addressed four warrant voids (amounts reported included $90, $204.08 and $467 for a deceased payee). All routine financial items were approved by voice vote and recorded as carrying 5-0.
On personnel matters, staff provided notice of several temporary hires for BSO and transport driver roles, listing Daniel Burgess, Gary Corcoran, Brian Jesperson and Mark Desartis among VSO drivers, and Dom Karski, Owen Edmonson, Kylan Wallace, Casey Obison, Bill Valentine and Jeff Carlson among transport drivers. The board also approved accepting the involuntary separation of Mary Mackie, Transportation Lead, effective Feb. 9, 2026, and authorized backfilling the position.
Other routine business included adopting a PERA Police & Fire plan enrollment resolution required to allow deputies to participate in that retirement system and approving a minor amendment to an earlier airport state grant resolution (noted as Board Resolution 2026-01-10) to reflect a change in the state's grant agreement number. All motions on these items passed unanimously.
The meeting closed with roundtable updates from commissioners about local projects — trail work, a bookmobile stop, AmeriCorps onboarding, and large-scale planning for the Ash River Trail — and then adjourned.
The board recorded the adjournment motion and closed the meeting without further public comment.
