The Wilson County Budget Committee voted to approve the draft 2026 budget as presented and left the county's tax rate unchanged at 1.9089.
Aaron, who presented the budget materials, told the committee there are no new positions in the draft and that the personnel changes reflect the committee's prior direction "which is the 4% adjustment to the table plus the 2% step." He said the insurance-fund contribution in the draft totals about $1,400,000 and that the package also includes a $400,000 litigation tax that the committee will need to pass. Aaron added the budget moves about $1,700,000 into interest income and that miscellaneous refunds — money unspent in prior years — account for roughly $6,000,000 in the revenue pages.
"This is the budget that you guys basically instructed us to prepare," Aaron said, adding staff had prepared replacement pages clarifying revenue-line items and pay-plan adjustments. After committee questions about why some line items appear larger than prior budgets, Aaron explained those figures reflect budget versus actual comparisons where unspent money returns as refunds in the current document.
The committee approved the budget by voice vote. Members also set a public hearing on the budget for June 16 at 6:30 p.m. and confirmed a June 5 meeting as the final cleanup session for any last-minute amendments. The committee discussed per-penny revenue and heard a staff estimate that one penny of the tax rate generates about $740,007.40.
Next steps: the public hearing on June 16 and routine cleanup at the June 5 meeting; the litigation-tax item will require formal passage as part of the continuing budget process.
