Teachers' union asks board to limit involuntary transfers and shorten staff meetings

A representative of the Los Altos Teachers Association (LATA) made a formal employee request during the meeting outlining two bargaining priorities.
Allison White, speaking for LATA and on behalf of Alex Schroeder, described concerns about involuntary transfers (administrative reassignments) and staff meeting length. LATA proposed a three-year waiting period between involuntary transfers for the same educator; district negotiators had proposed a two-year waiting period. Union representatives argued stability supports deeper teacher expertise, stronger family relationships and reduced turnover—citing member survey results indicating 74% favor a three-year waiting period.
The LATA representative also asked the district to cap staff meetings at 60 minutes no more than twice monthly; staff said about 40% of members already operate within a 60-minute structure and 78% of surveyed members supported the cap. The district had proposed a 75-minute cap. The union framed both items as reasonable measures to respect educator time and improve retention. Trustees thanked the union for the update; bargaining remains at the table and no board action was taken tonight.
