District proposes Savas 'My Perspective' ELA adoption, extends math license and reports no Title I inequity findings

Curriculum staff told the education committee that a multi-year teacher review selected Savas’s My Perspective as the recommended English language arts resource for grades 6–12, pending board approval at the January meeting. The presenter described a roughly two-year review process involving middle- and high-school teachers, rubrics from EdReports, sample materials and classroom feedback; priorities included more varied writing instruction, student engagement, differentiation and multilingual supports.
Separately, staff recommended a one-year extension of the district’s math licensing for grades K–8 (Curriculum Associates) to avoid making multiple large changes simultaneously. They said planning is underway for a full math curriculum decision next year and emphasized sensitivity to teachers’ capacity to implement change.
On Title I equity, the district’s Title I presenter reviewed data for the 26–27 equity plan required under the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). The analysis focused on two subgroups — low-income and minority students — and indicators of teacher experience and assignment. The presenter said the district did not find any disproportionality (no teachers deemed ineffective nor out of field in the October 1 snapshot) and therefore reported no immediate corrective actions. She noted one concentration of less-than-three-years-experience staff at Steccl Elementary and said the district will continue monitoring and use induction and mentorship to support new teachers.
Staff also presented additional items related to curriculum and student activities: a Power Library agreement to digitize yearbooks at no additional cost, several field trips (including a Washington, D.C., trip for NHS students) and an update on planned international travel; an EF Tours trip for 2027 is underway and a Galapagos trip for 2028 was proposed at about $4,900 per student with scholarship discussions ongoing.
