Jose Emmanuel Lopez Camilla pleads guilty in two aggravated-assault cases; sentences to run concurrently

Jose Emmanuel Lopez Camilla waived formal reading of the indictments and pleaded guilty in open court to aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in two causes arising from June 18, 2023. The court confirmed the pleas were voluntary and accepted the agreements.

When the judge asked how he pleaded, Lopez Camilla answered, “Guilty.” The court confirmed that he had reviewed and signed the plea documents with counsel and with the assistance of an interpreter. The judge advised Lopez Camilla that a plea of guilty or no-contest may have immigration consequences for non‑citizens, reviewed offender-registration and firearm-ineligibility admonishments (with written materials provided in Spanish), and confirmed the defendant understood the consequences.

The court found sufficient evidence to adjudicate Lopez Camilla guilty of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in both causes and imposed concurrent two‑year terms of imprisonment for each cause, with credit for time in custody to the extent provided by law. The judge stated, “There will be an affirmative finding of a deadly weapon,” and later reiterated, “I am also making an affirmative finding of a dead weapon.” The judge handed the defendant trial‑court certifications and admonishments and noted that cause number 23 DCCR 1412 would be dismissed as part of the agreement.

The interpreter was sworn before proceedings, and court staff and counsel checked documents in both English and Spanish during the colloquy. Lopez Camilla was returned to custody following the hearing.
