Weld County approves revised workers' compensation renewal, trims annual premium by about $15,000

Weld County commissioners on Jan. 5 approved an updated workers' compensation insurance renewal proposal with Pinnacle Insurance that reduced the county's projected annual premium.
Kelly Wessler of the county's human resources office told commissioners the National Council on Compensation Insurance updated the county's experience modification factor (EMOD) from an estimated 0.81 to 0.73. That revision prompted renegotiation with Pinnacle, cutting the proposed annual premium from $452,796 to $437,739.
"This proposal was based from an estimated experience modification factor of 0.81. The National Council on Compensation Insurance provided [Weld County] an updated EMOD of 0.73, which prompted negotiations with Pinnacle Assurance to reduce the annual premium from 452,796 to 437,739," Wessler said. The board voted to rescind resolution 2025‑3548 (dated 12/24/2025) and authorized the chair to sign the updated proposal.
Commissioners praised the staff negotiation. On a motion by Commissioner Buck and a second by Commissioner Peppler, the resolution authorizing the updated workers' compensation renewal passed unanimously.
The action amends the county's 2026 workers' compensation coverage terms and is administrative in nature; the board recorded no conditions attached to the approval.
