The Gardner School Committee’s facilities subcommittee told the full committee it reviewed 40 pages of maintenance work orders comprising 206 entries and found that most requests were reactive repairs rather than part of a preventative maintenance schedule.
Chair Mr. Schwartz highlighted that many requests came from elementary schools and noted an unusual number of broken cubby hooks; he said those cubbies were made of particle board and urged the building committee to pay attention to the quality of furniture purchases in future projects. "We need to really watch the quality of the furniture or the items that go in that building," Schwartz said.
Committee members discussed exploring partnerships with Monty Tech to provide hands‑on work and training opportunities for students while relieving some maintenance burden on district staff. The chair said he would investigate opportunities to have Monty Tech students do more work in district buildings under appropriate supervision.
No binding decisions were made at the full committee meeting; members urged greater attention to procurement standards and further exploration of workforce partnerships for maintenance and trades experience.
