Monroe County honors deputies who aided Meigs County recovery

Monroe County commissioners on the meeting agenda recognized local deputies who provided mutual-aid assistance to Meigs County search-and-recovery efforts after a Feb. 15 incident in which a young person ran into a lake.
Commission leadership said the county’s response was led by Sheriff Jones and Chief White and that Monroe County personnel “assisted in bringing a closure” to the case. The commission presented certificates to team members, including a certificate read into the record acknowledging the “exemplary service, dedication, and professionalism” of Deputy Robert John Leonard for work with the Meigs County Sheriff Department in February 2024.
A county official thanked the deputies for their immediate response and willingness to deploy; “within 15 minutes, we had 10 guys waiting to go,” the unidentified speaker said. Commissioners invited the recipients to pose for a group photograph after certificates were presented.
The recognition took place during the start of the commission meeting and was announced by county leadership before the body moved on to routine business.
