Industrial park grading resumes after storms; county reports 120,000 cubic yards moved

County staff updated the McCormick County Council on Oct. 2 about progress at the industrial park grading project and other recovery work after recent storms.
A project representative said crews have cleared and grubbed 24 acres and moved approximately 120,000 cubic yards of dirt, using scrapers and articulated trucks. "Mass grade should be completed by the end of next week," the presenter said, adding that the paving target is early November with closeout by Nov. 1 or December if grassing takes longer.
The presenter also described erosion-control work under way—installation of matting on pond slopes and pond baffles—and said the team will begin cutting subgrade for the road extension and preparing base, curb and gutter work. He credited site crews for pre-storm work that preserved progress during the hurricane.
Separately, staff reported the former Georgia‑Pacific site is serving as a DOT‑permitted debris staging and grinding site for hurricane cleanup and that the county has executed a grant with Thomas & Hutton for a countywide drainage study. The presenter said they had received one grama approval from the South Carolina Department of Agriculture and were awaiting Coordinating Council for Economic Development sign-off on a second grama application (the presenter referenced $300,000 in that program).
