John Powell, McCormick County tax assessor, told the county council on Oct. 2 that a scheduled countywide reassessment will cover the 2025 tax year and that notice of the new market values is likely to be mailed in May or June 2025.
"Our next reassessment is for 2025," Powell said, adding that reassessments occur every five years under Department of Revenue rules. He said homeowners will receive a notice of any changes and that a subsequent tax bill will reflect the new assessed value.
Powell said staff will offer conferences and on-site reviews for property owners who want to question a new value. He described a multi-step appeal process: property owners have 90 days from the date the notices go out to file an appeal, which initially goes to the local appeals board in McCormick County and, if necessary, can be taken to the administrative law court in Columbia.
Powell also summarized the county’s recent damage assessment work after the hurricane, thanked volunteers and departments who helped identify damaged properties for FEMA and SCEMD assessments, and offered to meet individually with residents about reassessment questions.
The assessor said exact mailing dates will depend on scheduling and recovery work following the recent storm; he encouraged residents to contact his office for estimates of how a reassessment might change an individual tax bill.
