Tupelo planning committee approves variance for large Burlington wall sign

The Tupelo Planning Committee voted unanimously Feb. 2 to approve a variance allowing a new wall sign for Burlington on North Gloucester Street that exceeds the size permitted by city code. The motion was made by Leslie Mart and seconded by Patty Thompson.
Staff told the committee that adjoining property owners had been notified and no public opposition was presented. ‘‘We have recommended approval,’’ a staff member said during the meeting. Stan House of Mid South Signs, who said he was representing Burlington, told the committee he was asking for a larger sign so it would be visible from the road and draw customers.
The application requested a wall sign substantially larger than the code maximum; committee discussion noted the new sign would closely match an existing sign and that a prior variance for the previous occupant had lapsed. The committee concluded the requested signage would not significantly change the existing appearance and approved the variance.
After the vote, staff told the applicant they would contact him with the next steps for permitting and installation.
