Select Board allows temporary parking at 3 Smith Road through May 1

The Brentwood Select Board voted to delay enforcement at 3 Smith Road, provided the property owner removes temporary storage and parking no later than May 1, 2026.
Mike Sanborn, who said he owns both 1 and 3 Smith Road, told the board the overflow parking and storage containers are tied to operations at 1 Smith Road, which was approved as a laydown yard for Michael’s Power, a subcontractor for Eversource. “I live at 55 Homestead Lane,” Sanborn said while explaining the temporary arrangement and that he did not want to pay for a full site plan for the adjacent lot.
Board members discussed whether a Select Board decision could bind a future board and whether parking under an Eversource right-of-way raised separate permission issues. One member said the property had been cleaned up and that vehicles were parked “well,” supporting a temporary accommodation. The Chair said the board’s authority is enforcement-focused and that a written letter establishing the May 1 deadline was required.
A motion to allow the temporary parking and storage until 05/01/2026 was made, seconded and approved by voice vote.
The board’s action is a temporary, enforcement-forbearing agreement tied to the owner’s written commitment that the use will end on or before May 1, 2026. If the commitments are not met, the Chair said the board may resume enforcement action.
