Santa Barbara proclaims February 2026 Black History Month

Mayor Randy Raus (reading the proclamation) referenced the national 2026 theme and the work of Dr. Carter G. Woodson and local organizations that support historic preservation and cultural programming, including the Santa Barbara History & Culture House, Santa Barbara City College, UCSB Multicultural Center and local NAACP chapter. "Por la presente, proclamamos febrero de 2026 como mes de la historia negra en Santa Bárbara," the mayor read as part of the proclamation.
The council recognized student leaders who participated in the meeting and heard brief remarks from UCSB students describing scholarship programs and mentoring work; students asked for continued funding to support scholarships and youth programs.
No formal votes were required for the ceremonial proclamation, which the council adopted by acknowledgement during the meeting’s opening ceremonial item.
