Jurors hear update on hospital feasibility study; parish could pursue 2-bed rural emergency hospital if state approves program

Juror Brett and others asked for an update on local hospital planning. Miss Stephanie and a Lake Charles Memorial representative said Memorial is compiling additional data for a feasibility study and that prior submissions lacked a common RFP/package, which complicated comparison of proposals.
The hospital representative said if Louisiana authorizes a rural emergency hospital designation, the parish could potentially become the first in the state to host a small rural emergency hospital suitable for the local population; architects have prepared designs that could be scaled to a 2-bed rural emergency hospital if state and federal approvals are obtained. The representative said energy partners (Commonwealth and Venture) have expressed continued support and that operating funding and certain additional state-level funds would become available only after a facility is operational.
Jurors discussed mileage to nearby hospitals, the potential for additional state funding once a hospital is operational, and the need for clearer procurement packages (RFP) when commissioning feasibility work. No vote or commitment of parish funds for construction occurred during the meeting; jurors requested more information and said the board will continue to pursue feasibility work with hospital partners.
