Council approves appointments, event closure and postponements on multiple items

At its meeting the Newman City Council approved a set of routine and administrative items.
Appointments: Melanie Tomlinson was appointed to the Convention Center Authority by council motion and voice vote. The council also affirmed that Jess Baron will continue as chair in a housing-authority-related reorganization and that two additional housing-authority members (one resident, one non-resident) will be added to maintain HUD compliance.
Events and petitions: The council approved a request by Anselm Murray to close Madison Street between Jackson Street and Jefferson Street for craft markets in 2026. The applicant’s motion carried by voice vote.
Postponements: The council postponed a request from the Newnan Housing Authority to waive the 2025 pilot payment to allow staff and council more time to review the request (staff said a decision is needed by February to close the 2025 books). An Imperium Development application was permitted to move to the March meeting at the applicant’s request, subject to payment of re-advertising fees; Melissa Griffiths, representing Imperium, said the team needs time to update traffic information requested by the city engineer.
Staff will circulate additional information on a local road project after public comment from business owner Flor Zimmerman regarding potential impacts on property value and access.
