Pitkin County schedules interviews for District 2 commissioner vacancy; ten applicants vetted

Knight said the county closed applications on Feb. 6 and, after eligibility checks with the clerk and recorder's office, confirmed 10 eligible candidates. The board reserved Feb. 17 for interviews using two panels (1:00'2:30 and 2:30'3:45) with 15-minute slots per applicant, and proposed holding an optional 30—5-minute hold period afterward for clarifying questions or to recall applicants. The county will send scheduling notices to applicants and post materials publicly.
Process and public comment: Staff said the appointment will proceed with a first reading on Feb. 26 and a second reading and oath of office on March 3. The board discussed whether to accept public comment at the first reading; counsel advised public comment must occur at some point during the two-reading process, and the board leaned toward allowing public comment to promote transparency.
Next steps: Staff will email applicants scheduling details and post applications for public review. Commissioners confirmed logistical preferences for the interview day and asked staff to provide candidate contact information for possible follow-up.
