Council also voted to award a $747,995 construction contract to Huntsbury Brothers Inc. for improvements at South Potomac and Baltimore. The motion, moved and seconded, included an allocation of an additional $30,000 from the city’s general fund to cover construction contingencies, consultant services, inspection and testing. Staff said the State of Maryland will contribute $622,236 toward the project and that the remaining balance will come from the city’s general fund under Capital Improvement Project 243.
The project was described in the meeting as a Safe Routes to School improvement intended to shorten the crossing distance, narrow the roadway at the intersection and replace the traffic signal to improve pedestrian safety. “We’re actually gonna be narrowing the street, making that crosswalk shorter so that it’s a safer path and then doing some other reconfigurations of the sidewalks and replacing the traffic signal there as well,” parks/engineering staff said.
