Syosset board asks administration for LED sign renderings, cost estimates after initial $25,000 per‑side price

The Syosset Central School District Board discussed installing permanent LED messaging ("lighted roadway") signs at selected district locations and directed the administration to return with design renderings and cost estimates.

Superintendent Doctor Rogers told trustees that preliminary vendor pricing showed "a sign is typically about $25,000 per side." He added that installation and masonry or electrical work could add costs and that final site identification is required before installation expense can be estimated.

Trustees debated timing and location: some said the project could wait until major facilities work is complete, while others suggested starting with a single sign — possibly at the high school — to evaluate community response. One trustee urged opening location selection to community input because street‑facing signs affect neighboring residents.

Board members emphasized the signs' communication value. A trustee noted many area schools already use such signs and that they could reduce certain mailings by posting district announcements on the LED boards.

The board directed administration to work with H2M to prepare three proposals with renderings (different locations and construction types, including masonry and steel structures), cost estimates and a public feedback plan for location selection. "What I'll do is I'll work with H2M to try and put together three different proposals at three different locations...We\'ll do renderings of those proposals in locations," Doctor Rogers said.

Next steps: administration will return with renderings and cost estimates and propose a public feedback process around the prioritized locations.
