Plan Commission defers U-Haul Schofield expansion over structural and code questions

The Weston Plan Commission on Aug. 12 deferred a U-Haul proposal to expand a personal storage facility at 5009 Schofield Avenue, citing unresolved building-code and structural verification questions.
Staff said the applicant’s plan relies on repurposed truck van bodies that have been modified to function as storage units. Because those bodies are nontraditional, staff cannot yet conclude whether they qualify as permanent structures under state building code and recommended the applicant either obtain Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS) approval or provide stamped structural-engineering drawings that verify wind, snow and connection loads for the proposed configuration.
David Barnes, representing U-Haul, described the company’s in-house process for removing van bodies, bolting and anchoring them together, and installing new overhead doors and finishes to match existing facilities. Barnes said he is obtaining engineered drawings and asked the commission to defer action for one month so the company can supply the required documentation.
Commissioners discussed whether the units should be treated as temporary or permanent, roof-span and snow-load concerns if a new common roof is added, and visual-design treatments. Staff noted that building-permit review would require the structural documentation. A motion to defer passed by voice vote; staff will bring the application back after receiving DSPS confirmation or an engineering stamp and final elevations.
