Summary
County interns showcased capstone projects — an internal GIS hub, an ADA curb‑ramp inventory, adaptive programming and a mobile health van — while the board approved grant registrations, a CDBG grant execution and multiple administrative motions at the Aug. 5 meeting.
At the Aug. 5 Manatee County commission meeting, 28 summer interns presented capstone projects to the board, highlighting several items staff said could move into county operations or future capital plans.
Key intern projects
- GIS catalog (internal hub): Natalie Huertas showed an internal Manatee County GIS catalog designed to make maps and geospatial resources easier for staff to find and reduce duplication. The catalog includes search fields, owner and alternate contact information and a flag that shows whether an item is still in use.
- ADA transition and missing curb ramps: Interns and staff reported an inventory of missing curb ramps and a three‑phase transition plan. The presentation identified 767 missing ramps countywide, a phased field survey and prioritization methodology, and recommended tools such as lidar collection or commercial platforms to speed data collection.
- Adaptive programming and playground accessibility: Summer Saras described outreach, a community survey and an upcoming "Adapt and Play" expo; she recommended hiring a full‑time recreation therapist to support adaptive programming across districts.
- Mobile community health van: An intern working with Public Safety and EMS proposed a mobile health van to expand primary and preventative care in high EMS‑call areas and to divert nonurgent cases from hospitals. The presentation proposed set operating hours, a focus on outreach to unhoused populations and partnership opportunities including the Mobile Healthcare Association.
- Alternative housing and RV policy: An intern from Development Services proposed allowing certain recreational vehicles in mobile home parks as an affordable, evacuation‑ready housing alternative with a 180‑day threshold and design/evacuation requirements, to give residents options after storm damage and address constraints from FEMA repair rules.
Board administrative actions tied to operations and funding
During the meeting the board also: - Approved the county’s annual federal registration update needed for grant eligibility (motion approved). - Authorized execution of the CDBG action plan grant agreement; staff noted HUD had approved the plan and emphasized the complexity of implementing what the chair called "a quarter‑billion dollars." - Reappointed four hoteliers to the Tourist Development Council in a single vote. - Voted to support a Pasco County proposed fix to Senate Bill 180 at the Florida Association of Counties policy conference.
Several commissioners praised the interns’ work and encouraged staff to incorporate the projects into operational and CIP planning. Commissioners asked follow‑up questions about costs, data‑sharing, and how projects would be maintained and updated.
