Clayton approves county boating-access agreement near East Clayton Elementary

The Town of Clayton on Dec. 11 approved an agreement with Johnson County that will allow construction of a small boating-and-fishing access site near East Clayton Elementary School.
Deputy Town Manager described the project as a county-owned site where the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission would design and construct a car-top vessel ramp, a small parking lot and a fishing pier for kayaks and canoes. The presenter said Johnson County will fund the construction and be responsible for major repairs, sediment removal and shoreline stabilization; the town’s role will be routine maintenance such as trash removal and mowing and gate control during emergencies.
The presenter emphasized the site is outside town limits and county-owned, and that signing the agreement will allow the county to move forward with required approvals. Council members asked about trash receptacles and monitoring use; presenters said trash receptacles would be provided and usage could be monitored in some fashion. One council member noted the facility would also benefit emergency response by providing a launch site for rescue boats.
A motion to adopt the Clayton NC 42 voting access agreement passed by voice vote.
