DeKalb tax commissioner asks county to fund vacancies, reclassify IT roles to expand senior-center services

Tax Commissioner Golden told the Finance, Audit and Budget Committee he will not pursue three new positions but asked that nine currently vacant positions be funded so they can be filled and that several positions be reclassified to reflect IT responsibilities and pay.
Golden said a pilot program placing tax-commissioner staff at senior centers — including Lew Walker and Central DeKalb Senior Center — has been successful, processing motor vehicle transactions and tax-exemption applications. He proposed expanding those services to other senior centers and to Stonecrest, the county's largest city by parcel count, but said expansion depends on filling vacancies.
Golden also described three staffers who perform IT work but are not classified as IT positions; he requested reclassification so pay and hiring can be competitive. He said his office carries vacancies frequently because pay is low compared with other county roles and private-sector opportunities.
Golden presented two totals: $37,620.20 for reclassifications and $408,286.20 to fund recommended vacant positions, for a combined request of $445,906.40. He said he would email documentation and urged the committee to consider funding vacancies to enable outreach services that could help seniors maximize exemptions.
