Simsbury — The Board of Education voted Feb. 12 to approve the first year of the district’s Capital Improvement Plan and forward the projects to the Board of Selectmen for inclusion on the May referendum.
Neil (Speaker 12) summarized the three projects in year one: replacement of the high‑school turf and track (priced at about $2,200,000 and last replaced in 2016), network infrastructure improvements (~$350,000 to upgrade servers and virtual desktop storage), and a $250,000 flooring/maintenance pool to address worn surfaces across schools. Neil said the turf and track replacement would likely be bid in May with construction planned for 2027.
Board members asked about timing and the possibility of state reimbursement. Administration noted some roofing projects can qualify for state reimbursement but said artificial turf is not currently eligible; "there's discussion amongst legislators now" that turf fields may be reclassified for future reimbursement, administration added.
Chair (Speaker 1) called for a voice vote on moving the CIP year‑one projects forward to the Board of Selectmen; the motion carried by voice vote.
The board’s action does not itself appropriate funds; it transmits a proposed slate for the town referendum process, where voters will consider the projects as part of a May ballot.
