Summary
Our Time explained built-in safety tools—photo/ID verification, detection systems, awareness prompts—and advised older users to beware of speed, urgency and secrecy when interacting online; the company urged staying on the app and using reporting tools.
Kenna, senior trust and safety operations manager at the dating site Our Time, described how the platform builds safety into product design and gave practical tips for older users to reduce scam risk.
Our Time's approach, Kenna said, centers on four elements: awareness (in-app safety tips), authenticity (photo and identity verification), advanced detection (technology to spot and remove scam accounts), and alliance (working with outside organizations and campaigns). She said these measures aim to remove scam accounts before they reach other users and to give people concrete steps while using the app.
Profile and messaging advice included using a clear, recent headshot as a primary photo, supplementing with hobby or family photos, and keeping first messages light and specific to the other person's profile. Kenna also cited engagement statistics—profiles with photos receive substantially more likes and messages—and encouraged users to trust their instincts when something feels off.
Safety-first behavior: Kenna recommended staying on the app as long as possible so reporting and safety tools can act, never sharing financial information or sending money/gift cards/cryptocurrency to someone you have not met in person, and choosing public places for in-person meetings. For suspected scam accounts she advised using the app's reporting function and the platform help center for guidance.
Kenna framed these features and tips as part of a joint effort: platforms, regulators and advocacy groups must work together to reduce the reach of scammers.
