Finance committee advanced a proposal to elevate the county’s aviation function to a standalone department, citing $1.1 billion in local economic impact, $98 million in assets and an $8 million operating budget for the airports, and noting succession planning and recruitment benefits.
Oakland County’s Finance Committee voted to forward a proposal to create a standalone Aviation Department to the full board after an explanation from staff and members of the aviation committee.
Presenter Sean said the county’s airports — especially Pontiac — generate significant economic activity, reporting figures including "$1,100,000,000 economic impact to the county, $98,000,000 in assets, [and] $8,000,000 operating budget," and noted the airports operate on proprietary (non-general fund) dollars. He said elevating aviation to department status will improve succession planning and recruitment for specialized staff.
Commissioners who serve on the aviation committee said the change was unanimously supported at committee and will be accompanied by a public hearing at the full board meeting. The committee advanced the reorganization to the board for the public hearing and final action.
