Oakland County’s Finance Committee approved a $5,000 sponsorship to the Hazel Park Promise Zone to support a March fundraising dinner and program activities.
Commissioner Ericsson Gault summarized the Promise Zone’s offerings — college prep, tuition support, mentorship, SAT prep, internships and job identification — and said the sponsorship will include publicity and a county table at the March 3 event. Commissioners requested assurance that the program supports trade pathways as well as college ("College isn't for everyone... make sure they don't forget the trades," Commissioner Long said), and staff responded that the program is not limited solely to college tuition.
The committee approved the sponsorship and discussed possibly making the support a recurring budget line in the future.
