Juvenile corrections pilot uses Translate Live devices; county told devices are not admissible in court

Johnson County’s juvenile community corrections office is piloting Translate Live devices to support language access, but staff cautioned the tools are not admissible for use in court trials.
David Cox, assistant director for juvenile community corrections, told commissioners Feb. 9 the pilot program is not recommended for court proceedings at this time. He said the representative he spoke with indicated the Indiana Supreme Court is testing multiple devices, but Cox did not specify how the court is evaluating them. Cox added that similar devices have been adopted in other states and by school districts.
Separately, the board approved an addendum to a juvenile detention center agreement for hood fire suppression and juvenile community corrections by voice vote.
County staff said they will continue to evaluate translation technology and report back as pilots and court testing progress.
