District technology staff proposed a tiered job structure to retain specialized talent, an internal AI documentation tool to improve processes, and an approximately $85,000 increase in annual salary-and-benefit costs to implement the reclassification.
Jacob Myers presented an initial recommendation to reorganize the Webster Groves technology department into tiered job bands to better match roles and pay with responsibilities. He said the goal is to retain and develop technical talent and to move staff internally through clearer levels of responsibility.
"We currently utilize AI in our department, both from an efficiency through our process implementation," Myers said, describing a tool that documents processes and provides an AI bot to assist technicians when problems recur. He said the AI documentation supports smoother transitions for retiring staff and faster onboarding for replacements.
Myers described a four-level structure (tech specialist 1–4) with expanded job descriptions, a help-desk focus for some 1-level staff, senior system leads for infrastructure, and level-4 network and architecture roles. "Cost would approximately be about $85,000 in salaries and benefit adjustments," he said, noting that some cost savings already realized could mitigate the increase.
Board members asked whether the $85,000 would be recurring; Myers answered that it would be an annual cost dependent on hiring choices and experience levels. The board did not vote on the reclassification at this meeting; Myers said a formal proposal with job descriptions and pay bands will be presented at the next board meeting with a hoped effective date of March 1.
