Jefferson Parish proclaims September 'Hunger Action Month' and honors Second Harvest Food Bank

On Sept. 17 the Jefferson Parish Council read a proclamation declaring September to be Hunger Action Month in Jefferson Parish and recognized the work of Second Harvest Food Bank of South Louisiana.
Council President Cynthia Lee Chang read the proclamation in the meeting, saying, "I, Cynthia Lee Chang, president of Jefferson Parish, do hereby proclaim the month of September, hunger action month in Jefferson Parish" (SEG 059–061). The proclamation cited Feeding America statistics about food insecurity in South Louisiana and reaffirmed the parish's commitment to partner with food banks and community organizations.
A representative from Second Harvest and other speakers thanked the council and urged residents to volunteer, host drives and use local resources; the speaker referenced the toll of the COVID-19 pandemic, active hurricane seasons and economic uncertainty that have increased demand for food assistance (SEG 015–028, SEG 065–082). The proclamation acknowledged Second Harvest’s warehouses and partnerships across the region and encouraged residents to visit volunteer websites and support local pantries.
The parish noted it serves more than 80 partner pantries and meal programs across the region and called for community cooperation to address food insecurity.
