The Glen Ellyn SD 41 Board of Education authorized an agreement to pay a portion of rent and utilities for a short‑term transportation depot used to stage buses while the district transitions vendors.
Administration explained Safeway — the outgoing bus vendor — required temporary staging space after being evicted from a depot. District 41 and Glenbard Township High School District 87 secured a short‑term lease for the facility at 505 East North Avenue in Carol Stream. District staff proposed a 50/50 cost‑share for the short term lease to avoid service interruption while First Student takes over routes.
Transportation staff reported the lease was effective Nov. 20 and runs through Dec. 20 (short‑term) so Safeway could continue to operate and avoid gaps in pupil transportation. The board asked clarifying questions about timing, route changes and which costs would be shared. Administration confirmed First Student will begin service Jan. 5 and that the primary immediate change will be schedule timing rather than wholesale route changes; route changes for tiered routes may follow.
Board member Jason Lobach moved to authorize the superintendent to execute the letter agreement with Glenbard Township High School District 87 to share payment of the rent and utilities; Ted Estes seconded. The board recorded a roll call vote in the affirmative; the motion passed.
Administrators said they brought the agreement to the board quickly to ensure continuity of service and that further route and timing details will be posted to families via Skyward and other district communications in early January.
