Harford County board declines to add school calendar to tonight's agenda after heated debate

The Harford County Board of Education declined to put a proposed school calendar back on the table at Monday's business meeting after a divided vote and extended public comment. A motion to add the calendar to the night's agenda failed in a roll-call vote reported as 5-4.
The vote followed dozens of public commenters who urged different outcomes on the calendar. Several parents and students said starting the school year before Labor Day would give more instructional days before AP and other standardized exams. One student speaker told the board that earlier start dates "allow better pacing, stronger AP and test state testing outcomes, and a more purposeful use of the school year." Other commenters asked the board to recognize Veterans Day as a full holiday and to include Eid al-Fitr on the district calendar to reflect the county's growing Muslim population.
Board members and the student member debated both the process and substance. Board member Sewell said he supported the calendar committee's proposed plan because it "will ensure the greatest opportunity for student achievement" and better aligns pacing for rigorous courses. Several other board members argued that with one member unable to attend, the board should delay calendar action until January so everyone can participate.
The motion to add the calendar for immediate action was made and seconded, but after a roll-call reading of votes the chair said the motion failed. With the calendar not added tonight, the board will return to the item at its next scheduled business meeting on Jan. 12, 2025.
The public comment period included multiple perspectives on when school should start and on equity-related calendar requests; the board did not adopt changes to the calendar at this meeting.
