Hitchcock Road Animal Services is seeking volunteers for a range of roles—dog walking, feeding, cat socialization, cleaning, adoption support, off‑site event staffing and foster support—Education and Volunteer Coordinator Kendra Brady said Wednesday.
Brady said volunteers must be at least 18 years old, and the shelter asks volunteers to commit to roughly one 2‑hour shift per week and about a six‑month commitment to allow for training and continuity. The onboarding process includes a brief volunteer orientation, an onboarding session at the health department and TB testing at Natividad Medical Center before training begins.
Volunteer roles vary from hands‑on animal care to remote foster support (follow‑up phone calls and check‑ins). Brady described dog walking as a flexible schedule beginning around 9:30 a.m., dog feeding times at about 8:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., and adoption support Tuesday through Saturday with adoptions starting at 1 p.m.
Brady announced two volunteer orientation sessions on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.; interested people may fill out an interest form on the Hitchcock Road Animals website or simply show up. She emphasized that volunteers help reduce kennel stress, improve animals’ adoption prospects and allow staff to focus on animal intake and medical care.
Adoption special: Brady said the shelter is running a weekend adoption special through Saturday the 14th in which large‑breed dogs over 8 months are half off the adoption fee; Brady cited a $150 adoption fee figure and said that fee includes spay/neuter, vaccinations, a rabies vaccination, microchip, dewormer and flea medication.
How to help if you can’t volunteer: Brady recommended sharing shelter posts on social media, running neighborhood blanket or towel drives, or purchasing needed items via the shelter’s Amazon wish list.
