The Davenport Historic Preservation Commission voted Feb. 10 to approve a certificate of appropriateness for a bronze plaque at the Davenport Public Library, 321 Main Street, recognizing the Edward Durell Stone building's listing on the National Register of Historic Places.
Staff member Matt described the plaque as a 12-by-12-inch bronze sign with a black background and bronze-gold lettering to be centered across four decorative tiles adjacent to the Main Street entrance. "The purpose is to recognize and commemorate the building's listing on the National Register of Historic Places," Matt said, and recommended approval under the commission's standards for new additions that match the designated property's size, massing, scale and character.
Jeff Collins, the library director, said he had no objection to the proposed plaque and told commissioners the library was open to a larger size if the commission preferred. After a motion, roll-call votes were recorded and the commission approved the certificate of appropriateness.
The plaque will be mounted on the facade near the building's main entrance; staff and the library will coordinate installation timing, with commissioners noting it could be installed as soon as the summer.
