Middletown High reports NEASC progress, lists growth priorities

MIDDLETOWN — The Middletown High School accreditation steering team briefed the Board of Education on its New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) process at the Feb. 10 meeting.
Anne Buchanan and Liz Vancini explained the NEASC cycle, described the collaborative visit and decennial review, and outlined the visiting team’s commendations and recommendations. Team members said NEASC commended the school’s Portrait of a Global Citizen, advisory program, use of data teams and opportunities for students to revise work. The visiting team recommended that the portrait be more fully integrated into curriculum, assessment and advisory programming and that districtwide written curriculum be presented more consistently across courses.
Buchanan and colleagues told the board they had submitted a first report of progress on Feb. 1 and will file additional progress reports and periodic updates as required by NEASC. The presenters said the NEASC visiting process is collaborative and that the commission will review progress leading up to future site visits. "We have since then, just within the last couple weeks, submitted to NEASC the first report of progress," one presenter said. The team answered board questions about who serves on NEASC visiting committees and explained that visiting teams are typically comprised of public-school educators and administrators from across New England.
Board members thanked the accreditation team for the work and asked for clarity on public availability of curriculum documents; presenters said some curriculum is available but not yet fully posted online and recommended continued progress toward consistent documentation and public access.
The board took no formal action on accreditation materials at the meeting; the team said its report and related materials will be posted on the high school website and shared with the board.
