DEI advisor introduces new assistant and touts community engagement work

Jan Harrison, the city’s DEI program advisor, updated the committee on DEI bimonthly activities and introduced a new DEI assistant, Anika Khan.
Harrison said Khan started on the day of the meeting and that community engagement efforts over the summer — including participation in a Lake Washington School District back‑to‑school event — provided insight into community needs. "I am developing, continuing the work on the glossary, vocabulary, to be able to do this work in a meaningful way," Harrison said, describing the glossary as more than terminology but a historical and contextual tool to reduce harm and improve intercultural understanding.
Council members thanked Harrison and welcomed Khan. Harrison said the Ready AR plan is progressing and is being reviewed by the Welcoming Redmond team and that the department will return the plan for future council consideration. She also highlighted public events tied to welcoming week (a geocache scavenger hunt and a World Cafe) and an internal staff potluck scheduled for Sept. 19.
The committee expressed appreciation for DEI outreach and asked to be updated on forthcoming Ready AR materials and planned MLK Day of Service activities.
