The Tuscaloosa City Council on Monday adopted two zoning amendments and tabled a third for one week after property representatives asked for more time to resolve outstanding issues.
Planning staff presented two related rezoning requests affecting land near New Scribe Ferry Road and Lexington Downs in Council District 3 and said both conform to the city’s future land-use framework. Jimmy Duncan, representing Scribe Ferry Land Company LLC, told the council the proposal had been revised since its prior appearance and that a neighborhood concern over“two competing convenience stores” had been resolved: “That’s behind us now. It’s come down to one store,” he said.
The council moved and adopted zoning amendment number 25 with no members of the public speaking in opposition. A second rezoning, zoning amendment number 26, was also adopted after staff and the petitioner answered brief questions from council members.
When the council reached zoning amendment number 27, property representatives Richard Henry and Seth Richardson asked the body to delay action to continue discussions with neighbors and staff. Richard Henry said the owner representatives wanted “a one week continuance to continue discussions to get this worked out before we bring it back to you.” Councilor Tynes moved to table the item for one week; the motion carried.
Petitioners and one council member said they planned to meet the next day to resolve outstanding site configuration issues before returning with a revised proposal. The council set no additional conditions in tabling the item.
What’s next: Amendment 27 will return to the council after one week for further consideration; other rezoning items adopted at the meeting will proceed under the city’s review and implementation processes outlined by planning staff.
