VIMS shows new oyster-visualization tool to VMRC advisory committee; staff urged to use it for planning and marketing
Summary
VIMS presented a new GIS-based oyster visualization tool built from decades of survey data; committee members were asked to test it for reef-level planning, buried-shell inventorying, and outreach to legislators and buyers.

Roger Mann of the Virginia Institute of Marine Science demonstrated a new oyster visualization tool to the VMRC Shellfish Management Advisory Committee, describing it as a GIS platform that consolidates survey history and makes reef-scale decisions easier.
"This is the tool to do it with," Roger Mann told the committee, explaining the platform turns roughly 2.5โ3 million survey data points into a user-friendly mapping and time-series interface. He said the tool will allow committee members and staff to see reef-by-reef histories, buried-shell layers and spat-set trends more efficiently than previous static presentations.
Mann asked the committee to actively test the interface and to consider ways VIMS and VMRC can use the tool beyond internal planning โ for example, as a marketing asset when talking to legislators or grocers. "If you're at this point where you're trying to sell a product...Kroger doesn't want 20 minutes of going through all of the GIS," Mann said, urging development of brief product-focused outputs for outreach.
Committee members suggested involving VIMS staff in fishery improvement and audit work and asked for targeted training sessions. Mann said the tool will be a primary agenda item at an upcoming VIMS day and that staff intend to make the interface available to the committee for hands-on review.
