City approves purchase agreement for two ambulances, delivery expected in 18-24 months

The Dearborn Heights City Council voted to award the bid for two replacement ambulances to Medic Specialty Vehicles for $594,982 and authorized returning bid bonds to unsuccessful bidders.
Deputy Fire Department staff told the council the existing ambulances were built in 2016 and have roughly 97,066 and 121,149 miles on them; repair costs over the past five years totaled approximately $53,475 and $59,169 respectively. Staff said replacement units will be gasoline-powered to reduce maintenance compared with the older diesel engines, and that the estimated build and delivery time is 18 to 24 months.
Councilman Saab moved acceptance of the lowest bid and Councilman Constance seconded; the motion carried by voice vote. Finance staff said the purchase will be addressed in the next budget cycle and that staff are exploring financing and grant options to reduce immediate budget impact. The fire department said it is working on an apparatus replacement plan to present to council.
The council recorded the action and directed staff to pursue financing options and to bring a replacement plan to the mayor and council.
