The Norfolk Public Schools Board of Education approved a two-year contract for Eric Wilson to serve as superintendent, with the understanding he will assume the role on July 1.
Board leadership explained the contract includes a clause intended to discourage an early departure: if Wilson resigns within the first three years (through 2029), the district may deduct $10,000 from his salary to help cover the cost of conducting a superintendent search. "We put this clause in that if Eric would resign... in the first 3 years... we would charge him or deduct $10,000 from his salary," a board speaker said during the meeting.
Patty Goebbels clarified that, despite public references to Wilson as "new superintendent," he cannot speak as superintendent before July 1. Wilson thanked the board and said he was looking forward to the role.
The board voted 5-0 to approve the contract; the full contract will be posted on the district website the day after the meeting.
Next steps: the contract will be uploaded to the district website, and the board will follow the renewal/extension procedure specified in the contract language.
