Lauderhill honors community leaders and students during Black History Month ceremony

Lauderhill, Fla. — The City Commission celebrated Black History Month on Feb. 9 by presenting proclamations to a roster of local leaders, educators and community advocates and spotlighting student civic engagement.
Mayor Grant and commissioners recognized multiple honorees described as "Lauderhill Heroes of Change," including Dr. Hayward J. Benson Jr., Andrea Brennan, Willie May Cooper, Rev. Marcus Davidson and others for long careers of service, education and youth mentorship. Presentations included short remarks from honorees, distribution of keys to the city and commemorative proclamations.
The mayor also presented a proclamation for Antonia Burgess and the 5,000 Role Models of Excellence mentorship program, and students who had participated in a Broward County college tour and legislative advocacy trip shared experiences from visits to Florida A&M, Florida State and Full Sail University. Students asked the commission to consider local versions of the program to provide mentorship and advocacy opportunities for Lauderhill youth.
Commissioners praised honorees and students and noted the importance of community recognition and continued investment in mentorship, after‑school programs and college pathways.
What happens next: The city indicated support for continued student programs and partnerships with schools and non‑profit organizations.
