Business owners from Old Town Center presented a proposal to rebrand the area as the "Marymount Design District," to improve signage and enforcement so customers can reliably find parking, and to raise the profile of a cluster of design-focused showrooms and studios.
"We've created this design community...we would help contribute to the cost," said Karen Fallon, describing a cluster of architects, designers and showrooms that would benefit from improved directional signage and enforcement of an existing four-hour business-parking rule. Fallon noted Sunset Properties (the landlord) has offered to notify tenants and help with outreach and is willing to contribute to signage consistent with village design standards.
Council members asked for a concise three-point summary — parking enforcement, parking signage and district branding — and discussed legal constraints on changing signs that reserve spaces for businesses. Village staff offered to list businesses on the village website and review enforcement options; the village engineer and staff will follow up on signage locations and potential costs.
No ordinance or budget appropriation was made at the meeting; business owners were invited to provide contact information and coordinate further with staff.
