Community members urge board to name Terra Nova baseball field for longtime volunteer

Two members of the public used the non‑agenda public comment period to ask the board to consider naming the new Terra Nova sports facility (baseball field) after a longtime local volunteer sports leader.

Mike Mooney, who identified himself as a Terra Nova alumnus and longtime coach and volunteer, told trustees he had worked with staff and alumni in support of naming the facility after the nominee. Mooney said board staff had initially indicated the board would not move forward, but he urged the board to consider community input and referenced community comments and historical ties. Mooney used the surname spelling "Hinshaw" when describing the nominee’s decades of service including founding a hall of fame and organizing alumni events.

Amber Friedler, an AYSO 157 board member, said the nominee had spent more than five decades supporting youth athletics as a sports editor, club president and Hall of Fame inductee. Friedler described the nominee’s impact on generations of athletes and urged the board to create a lasting tribute: “Let us name the Terra Nova Baseball Field after Horace Henshaw, the Horace Henshaw Sports Complex,” she said, using the alternate spelling "Henshaw."

Board staff responded that facility‑naming follows CSBA guidance and that the district reserves naming to individuals whose contributions are directly connected to serving the school; staff said they had provided guidance to the speaker. No formal board action on naming occurred during the meeting.
