Board agrees to hold March 13 as contingent school day to recoup missed hours after winter closures

Summary
After eight missed student days earlier in the winter, board members reached consensus to leave March 13 as an optional workday for now and convert it to a student day only if the district misses another day due to weather, recovering six instructional hours without extending the school year beyond Memorial Day.
Henderson County school officials reviewed the district’s instructional‑hours requirement and recommended a contingency to recapture time lost to recent winter weather.
State rules require 1,025 instructional hours. Staff reported the district had 179 student days scheduled (1,074 hours) and had missed eight student days because of inclement weather, plus a series of delays and early releases that produced a net loss of instructional hours. Staff presented options including converting March 13 (currently an optional workday) into a student day to regain six hours.
A district presenter recommended two options: convert March 13 now to a student day or wait and convert it only if another weather day is missed. After discussion about families’ travel plans and teacher planning needs, the board reached consensus to wait and convert March 13 only if an additional weather day occurs. Staff were authorized to communicate that contingency plan to families and to convert the day automatically if the trigger (another missed day) occurs.
Board members also discussed alternate recovery options (Good Friday or adding days after Memorial Day) and emphasized minimizing disruption to families and senior events. Staff said they will notify families and staff via standard district communications if March 13 becomes a student day.
Next steps: staff will implement the contingency if another weather day is missed and will report any changes in calendar status to the community.
