Wyoming Valley West board hears proposed state budget would raise basic and special-education funding

At its Feb. 11 meeting, the Wyoming Valley West School District heard from the finance committee that the governor's proposed 2026—27 state budget would modestly increase the district's state aid totals.
"The Wyand Valley West School District, in that budget is expecting a 1.1% increase in our basic education funding, which equates to an increase of about $336,794," Finance Committee member Mister Wilson said. "And then there's also a proposed increase in our special education funding in the amount of 5.4% or 321,726."
Why it matters: state education aid is a central input to the district's upcoming budget cycle. The committee framed the figures as preliminary: the governor has only proposed the budget and totals may change as the legislative process proceeds. Board members were told local budget work under Business Manager Mister Picharek will begin soon.
The board did not take a formal vote on the figures; Wilson presented them as information for budget planning. He repeated that the numbers are early-stage and subject to change as state deliberations continue.
Next steps: district staff will move into local budget preparation in the coming weeks and will return to the board with recommended local budget adjustments once state allocations and local revenue estimates are finalized.
