FAYETTEVILLE — A proposed Downtown Arts Council open-space improvement was sent back to Parks and Recreation on Thursday for further stakeholder engagement after council members raised concerns about turning pervious ground into stamped concrete and the absence of Arts Council input.
Staff presented a concept to beautify a narrow green space between two downtown buildings — proposing brick pavers, drainage improvements and lighting — to create a more inviting pocket park. Several council members urged broader stakeholder participation, requested ownership and parcel surveys, and suggested alternatives to impervious stamped concrete to avoid creating additional stormwater runoff.
Council also requested Parks and Rec coordinate with the Arts Council, Cool Springs and other downtown partners and consider programming (seasonal events or art installations). The council voted unanimously to return the project to Parks and Recreation for further collaboration and a refined improvement plan that will be presented back to council.
