OKCPS board unanimously approves facility name, calendar changes and charter; accepts monitoring reports

The Oklahoma City Public Schools Board of Education voted on multiple items during its Feb. 9 meeting, carrying each measure by a 7-0 margin.
Facility naming: The board approved a motion to name the John Marshall Enterprise High School early childhood facility the Potts Family Early Learning Center at John Marshall Enterprise High School. The motion was recorded as made by board member Jessica Cifuentes and seconded by board member Juan Lacuna; the board recorded seven aye votes and no nays.
Academic calendar: To comply with House Bill 1087 (an increased minimum of 1,086 instructional hours and a limit on virtual days) and to bank an additional snow day, the board approved modifications to the 2025–26 calendar that convert two previously scheduled professional/work days to student instructional days. Chief Talent Officer Brad Herscher explained the change would allow more flexibility for winter/spring weather disruptions.
Charter authorization: The board authorized the Stanley Hope Field Academy as a district-sponsored charter subject to applicable law and board policy.
Consent agenda and athletics: The consent agenda passed 7-0. As part of consent-board staff discussed and received support to apply to the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association for independent football scheduling for five high schools (Classen SAS at Northeast, John Marshall Enterprise, Northwest Classen, U.S. Grant and Capitol Hill) to address participation and competitive imbalance; staff said the move aims to increase participation and player safety.
Monitoring reports: The board accepted monitoring reports for Interim Goal 3A (eighth-grade pre–postsecondary enrollment) and Goal 2 (middle-school math progress and Interim Goal 2C). Superintendent Polk said the district is on track for the 60.8% eighth-grade pre–postsecondary enrollment target if spring CTE additions hold and highlighted gains on NWEA measures for seventh-grade math, while noting staffing and scheduling challenges.
Executive session: The board entered executive session to discuss the superintendent's evaluation and employment; it returned to open session with no action taken, then adjourned.
