Deputy Superintendent Lance Gropp and other staff said the uptick aligns with the higher end of a 2021 demographer forecast and that most of the district’s recent growth — about 85% in last year’s analysis — came from students transferring in from other parts of Texas rather than internationally. The district’s reported student demographics at the time of the presentation were about 49% Hispanic, 28% African American, 22% Anglo and 5% Asian.
District officials told trustees they still estimate roughly 4,000 open seats across campuses but said the current growth trajectory (250–300 students per year) exceeds the typical year‑to‑year increases the district has managed before. Officials recommended planning for possible boundary adjustments or other capacity measures in the next three to five years if gains continue.
Trustees asked staff to provide the enrollment and discipline data disaggregated by campus and demographic groups in future reports, including DAEP placement overlays, so the board can better evaluate equity and resource needs. The district agreed to add campus‑level breakdowns and demographic cross‑tabs in future reporting.
