Council tables Rogers Road widening requests after developers cite transmission poles

Edinburg — The City Council on Wednesday tabled two right-of-way/road-widening variance requests for property on Rogers Road after lengthy discussion about utility transmission poles that constrain construction of the thoroughfare profile.
Representatives from the ownership and engineering team said poles in the required right-of-way prevent achieving the standard 57-foot back-to-back profile and that relocation of poles could cost hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars. "We'll widen it as much as we can up to the transmission poles," the applicant said, but staff and council members said an informal commitment is not sufficient and asked for a written plan and conditions.
One council member noted that escrowed funds from developers can later be used to leverage grants or matching dollars for future roadway improvements. The maker of the motion to table asked the applicant to provide engineering plans and exact widening amounts; the motion to table passed unanimously.
Council indicated it will revisit the items after staff reviews written plans that show the maximum feasible widening and any recommended conditions or assurances from the developer.
