Council adds student representative to downtown steering committee

The council approved an amendment to the City Code to add a student representative to the downtown district steering committee.
Council members explained the seven-member advisory committee provides input on downtown development and does not have authority to approve permits or licenses. The change in ordinance 9B allows the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley's student government to select the student representative rather than the city appointing that member. Ian Alexander Alfaro, vice president of UTRGV student government, spoke in favor and described the potential for student input on arts, culture and downtown activation.
Councilors noted the committee remains advisory and acknowledged concerns that student perspectives should be balanced by other members; the amendment passed by voice vote.
