Council backs grant application for Veterans Detention Pond trail

The Edinburg City Council supported submitting a Texas Parks and Wildlife grant application to build a half-mile perimeter trail around the planned Veterans Detention Pond.
Javier Salazar, president of the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board, told the council the project would include a 0.5-mile asphalt trail, ADA-compliant ramps, parking, solar lighting, benches, fencing around the pond, bike racks and trail signage. He said the project responds to community feedback in the parks master plan and is expected to be completed in 2026 if funded.
Salazar described the project as a way to provide a safe, accessible walking and bicycling resource for people of all ages in an underserved part of the city and asked the council to authorize the city manager to submit the grant application. Council had no questions and moved to approve the public hearing item along with related items.
Council approved items A, B and C during the public hearing vote; staff will proceed with the grant submittal and return with any required follow-up if the application advances.
